Stains appear in different parts of the tooth and can be of two types: internal or external. Internal ones occur inside the dental tissues (enamel and dentin) and usually have a whitish color. They have different causes, such as the natural aging process, fluorosis, dental trauma, among others.
External stains, on the other hand, are the result of contact with pigmented substances on the dental surface and arise due to some factors such as smoking, excessive consumption of coffee and soft drinks, intake of food with dyes and even accumulation of bacterial plaque.
What makes teeth stained?
Stains on teeth can appear for a variety of reasons. Discover the main ones:
* Caries: in the initial stage of caries, enamel demineralization takes place. This process causes the appearance of a white spot on the tooth. If not treated soon, the tooth can be compromised;
* Foods and drinks: the pigments found in foods with a lot of dye (snacks, curry, açaí, soy sauce, etc.) and dark drinks (coffee, wine, black tea and soft drinks) leave residues that stick to the tooth enamel, causing stains ;
* Cigarette: in addition to being very harmful to health, nicotine, a substance present in cigarettes, affects the enamel and accumulates on the surface of the tooth, causing yellow and dark spots;
* Fluorosis: in childhood, excessive intake of fluoride during the formation phase of milk and permanent teeth causes the appearance of white or dark spots. It is recommended that the dentist indicate the problem and the amount to be used;
* Dental trauma: during the tooth formation process, falls, falls and blows can result in white spots. When they are already formed, trauma causes an internal stain and can lead to darkening of the tooth;
* Canal treatment: if there are failures during this procedure, remains of blood and chemical materials used during canal treatment can be stored in the inner layers of the tooth and oxidize over time, leading to darkening of the tooth;
* Aging: the enamel of the tooth wears out over time and exposes the dentin, an inner layer of the tooth that has a yellowish color.
