The Benefits of Choosing Dental Implants

Dental implants can offer you some significant benefits including the following:

  • An upgrade from dentures: Because they are fused to your jawbone, dental implants will not have to be removed, like dentures, which will improve your ability to chew foods and speak comfortably.
  • Improved aesthetics: Dental implants will improve the natural appearance of your smile as well as your jawline and prevent any premature sagging of your face that can develop due to missing teeth.
  • Structural integrity: By filling in the gaps, dental implants not only preserve the density of the jawbone, but they also significantly reduce the likelihood of infections developing.
  • Overall oral health: Patients who have dental implants placed often report an improved ability and likelihood to brush and floss normally, which then results in improved overall oral health.

Dental implants can be a wonderful option for you if you are looking for a long-term solution for your missing teeth. If you would like to learn more about dental implants, please contact our staff at Vita Dental and set up a consultation.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The entire procedure of having a dental implant placed will take several visits and several months to complete.

The very first step is at your initial evaluation. We must take x-rays to determine the density of your jawbone to see if it can support the implant. If the jawbone has atrophied, we may have to initiate the process by doing some bone grafting. Of course, if there is a damaged or decayed tooth that must be extracted, we will remove it also.

After these possible preliminary steps are completed, we will begin the actual implant procedure by administering a local anesthetic to the immediate area. When the tissue is numb, we will create a small incision to gain access to your jawbone. We will drill an exceedingly small hole and insert the titanium post into your jawbone.

The next step takes patience. It will take several months for the post to fuse to the jawbone. This is an important stage because this is how the strength and stability are secured. When we are comfortable that this  step has been completed, we add an abutment or extension to reach the surface of your gum line. At this point we either screw or cement the artificial crown on the abutment and your dental implant is finished.

A Dental Implant versus a Dental Bridge

If you are a candidate for a dental implant you may also consider a dental bridge, especially if you have experienced significant bone loss. The dental bridge uses the two neighboring natural teeth as abutments to support the artificial tooth or teeth to fill the gap. There are several varieties of dental bridges that can be used, including traditional, cantilever, Maryland, and even implant-supported bridges.

A benefit of the dental bridge is the fact that the procedure is less invasive and less painful. Dental bridges are also considerably faster and less expensive, although your dental implant will last much longer, so you can end up spending more in the long run by choosing a bridge. Both treatment options are viable solutions for addressing missing teeth. Vita Dental will discuss your best option at your evaluation.

Proper Aftercare for a Dental Implant

One of the main contributing factors for the life expectancy of your implant will be how you care for the implant. Your dental implant should be treated just like a natural tooth and should be properly brushed and flossed. This will help to maintain the health of your gums, and your natural teeth.

A good preventative oral hygiene plan will have you brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time. This habit is complimented by flossing and rinsing at least once a day.

It is also important to understand that even though your new implant will be strong a healing process is required after your implant is placed. For the first few weeks Vita Dental will recommend a diet consisting of softer foods, with a slow introduction of harder foods. Your jawbone needs to acclimate to the new force that is being applied to it.

If your dental implant was placed due to a sports injury, please make sure to use proper protection moving forward, such as a mouth guard. This will help to protect your new implant, as well as your natural teeth.

A dental implant is an excellent, long-term solution for tooth replacement.
