What to Expect from Regular Dental Cleanings?

Regular dental cleanings usually compliment a comprehensive oral examination or your scheduled, regular evaluation.  Once we have completed the initial exam, unless we have diagnosed any gum disease issues, one of our team will perform a regular dental cleaning, or prophylaxis.  If you do have some gum disease, we most likely will recommend a deep cleaning first to treat the infected soft tissue and then allow your gums to heal before we finish our dental cleaning.

During the first step of your regular dental cleaning, Vita Dental will use either an ultrasonic scaler or a specific dental hand scaler to remove the debris, calculus, and plaque from your enamel, in between your teeth and then also around your gum line.

When we have completed this stage of the cleaning, a hygienist will follow up with a polishing step that uses a special paste, polishing each tooth one at a time. Finally, we will floss your teeth very well, and then we will make recommendations or suggestions about a proper flossing technique for you to continue with at home.

Just like that your teeth are professionally cleaned. Once your dental cleaning is completed, one of our team may follow up with you about any treatment our dentist may have recommended and schedule any follow up appointments if necessary.

We Will Offer Continuing Education for your At Home Oral Hygiene

During your exam and teeth cleaning, we will also suggest ways that you can keep your teeth and gums healthy at home. At Vita Dental, we strongly believe that good oral hygiene at home is important in collaboration with visiting our office. We will recommend that you use a soft toothbrush twice a day, two minutes each time, and to add fluoride toothpaste. This will remove the harmful sugars and bacteria from your teeth daily and the fluoride will help to replace vital minerals that your teeth lose daily. You can also benefit from daily flossing to remove any food particles and bacteria from between the teeth. Completing your oral hygiene with an antibacterial mouthwash will help to kill any remaining germs.

Your diet is just as important to your oral health as your overall health. Do your best to drink as much water as possible and to be aware of eating a balanced diet that contains dairy products, lean protein, green vegetables, and complex carbs so that your body gets the necessary nutrients it needs to stay healthy. We can provide additional tips during your examinations and your dental cleanings.

Dental Cleaning for Adults

The dental industry strongly suggests that all adults receive teeth cleanings at least twice a year. Good oral health is essential regardless of your age. And as we age, our risk for an oral infection will continue to increase. The older our teeth become, the hard, protective enamel begins to wear away, and it will become easier to get a cavity. The best way to help this is by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. You should always visit Vita Dental every six months, regardless of if you are having any issues. We will create flexible appointment opportunities so that you are able to schedule around your work or family commitments, making it easier to get a good teeth cleaning and keeping them clean.

Dental Cleanings for Children

At Vita Dental, we will recommend that you bring in your children for oral exams and cleanings beginning on their first birthday, and then every six months after that.  Introducing your child early and consistently to the dentist is a crucial way to establish your child’s trust and comfort during dental visits and create a positive relationship with our team at Vita Dental.

Dental Cleaning for Sensitive Teeth

The team at Vita Dental will practice gentle dentistry and will provide teeth cleanings for you if you have sensitive teeth. Too often adults avoid visiting the dentist due to their concerns that their teeth will hurt or feel worse during the exam or a dental cleaning. When interacting with our staff, you can feel relaxed regardless of how sensitive your teeth are. We can discuss the option of a variety of sedation methods, so you remain calm and not experience anxiety or feel discomfort while getting your examination and dental cleaning.

It is also important to understand the reason why teeth become sensitive. Often it is from the enamel of the teeth wearing away and getting thin. Enamel will wear away not only from age, but also your diet and improper oral health care. Brushing with a desensitizing toothpaste can help, but you still need to continue visiting us to ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy. Otherwise, the sensitivity will only increase. During your exam, tell us about the level of discomfort you are feeling so that we can consider ways to reduce it by using a fluoride treatment or a dental sealant
