The Different Types of Veneers Available

There are several types of veneers available to improve your smile. You will want to review the different types with us during your consultation appointment to make sure you choose the best option for your lifestyle:

  • Porcelain- The most popular of the veneers, porcelain is a durable and long-lasting option. The ceramic layers are composed of dentin and enamel to portray a very natural look and an excellent fit. It is necessary to remove a thin layer of enamel on the front surface of the natural teeth size with this method which may not be your best option.
  • Composite- If you are looking for a more affordable veneer restoration, composite veneers can be a great option. There will be truly little to no preparation needed for the teeth before placing this restoration. Composite veneers can also be just as effective in correcting your dental concerns. They will not last as long as porcelain, requiring replacement in five to ten years.
  • Prepless- This type of veneer requires no reduction to your natural teeth before the placement. Prepless veneer shells are very thin porcelain pieces that lay over your existing teeth just like traditional porcelain veneers. If you are looking to correct several dental issues, then you may not be the best candidate for this option so make sure to address all concerns with Vita Dental about this option thoroughly first.
  • Minimal Prep- As the name suggests, minimal prep veneers can be placed with little preparation to the teeth before bonding. An exceedingly small amount of the teeth still needs to be removed before the veneers are placed, allowing you the option of maintaining more natural tooth structure than traditional porcelain veneers.

The Porcelain Veneer Procedure

There are three stages of the veneer process: The initial consultation, the preparation, and the placement.

  • Consultation- To ensure that veneers are a good solution for you, start by making a consultation appointment with Vita Dental first. Discussing your goals at this evaluation will help us determine if veneers are an appropriate solution. We will also review veneer types and color shades available with your budget and goals in mind.
  • Preparation- In the preparation visit, we will start by making some room for the veneers to be placed over your existing teeth. In this step we will remove a thin layer of enamel. This procedure is usually painless, but we may give you the option for anesthesia if you are feeling uncomfortable.
  • Next, we will take an impression of your teeth to help create the new shape you are looking for with the veneers. We will also choose the most appropriate shade of porcelain to match the current color of your teeth or your selected color if you are intending to correct discoloration. Your veneers will then be made at a dental lab before they are ready for bonding.
  • Placement- The final appointment is fun. First, we will confirm that the veneers match the color and shape desired. We may need to trim or change the color slightly before the bonding process begins.

After your veneers are approved, Vita Dental will need to prepare your teeth by conducting a general cleaning, polishing, and then etching of the teeth. Etching will roughen up the surface by using an abrasive dental liquid for the veneers to adhere to your teeth.

Once this prep work is completed, a bonding cement will be applied before placing the veneers over the teeth. To assist the cement in drying a blue light will be used to quicken the curing process. With that you have a revitalized healthy smile.

Proper Aftercare

You may experience some tooth sensitivity after your veneers are placed with hot or cold foods or drinks. This side effect will subside in a few weeks, but make sure to check in with us if the sensation lasts longer or continues.

After achieving the new smile you have been waiting for, you will want to maintain your veneers to ensure a long-lasting result. If you grind your teeth you should always wear a night guard while sleeping. Veneers, much like natural teeth, will not do well with clenching and twisting, and will result in cracking or fracturing. You will also be encouraged to avoid hard foods such as dense nuts or ice that will stress your veneers causing failure.
