Several Causes for a Tooth Extraction
- Infection- Inside every natural tooth, there is soft tissue called pulp that is connected to the nerves of the tooth. When the tooth becomes damaged and the decay reaches the tooth’s pulp, the pulp will become infected. When this pulp becomes infected, it can cause toothaches and sharp pains in the tooth. Usually, these infected teeth can be saved by Vita Dental by performing a root canal. A root canal is when we drill into the natural tooth and remove the infected pulp from the tooth. Once the pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned, it is filled with a composite filling and then sealed. Millions of teeth are saved from extraction every year with a root canal. However, when a root canal cannot fix the infection then the tooth must be extracted. The reason the tooth must be extracted is to alleviate the pain from the infection and to also stop the infection from reaching your jawbone.
- Decay or Trauma- Accidents happen, and when an accident happens with your tooth it can cause extreme pain from the trauma felt by the tooth. Vita Dental can repair damaged teeth by using a filling to fill in the cracks or fractures that were caused by the trauma. The cracks need to be filled to prevent infection from starting and spreading, and to prevent any decay. If a filling will not work, we may use a dental crown. A dental crown covers the entire surface of the tooth. It is made of a ceramic, porcelain or a metal material that is used to cover the entire tooth above the gum line. Dental crowns are often used to seal a tooth after a root canal procedure or to protect a badly traumatized tooth. When neither of these options help prevent decay of the tooth from spreading, we have no choice but to extract the tooth to prevent further damage to the tooth and the surrounding teeth as well.
- Gum Disease- One of the leading causes of natural tooth loss is periodontal disease. This is a gum disease that causes the gums to slowly detach from the teeth when there is an excessive amount of plaque or tartar build up along the gum line. As the gums start to pull away from the teeth it creates pockets of empty space that become infected. This is when you begin to notice your gums become extremely swollen, red and bleed often. If this disease is left untreated, the connectivity tissue that holds onto your teeth will start to lose its grip on your teeth. In extreme cases, your teeth will start to loosen up on their own and Vita Dental may need to extract them.
- Wisdom Teeth- Wisdom teeth start erupting in our late teens or twenty-something age. In some cases, wisdom teeth will grow in perfectly straight, unpainful, and does not shift teeth and does not cause trouble. In most cases, wisdom teeth grow crooked and start pushing your other teeth in different directions, causing a misalignment. And if you have spent thousands of dollars on braces, this is not an ideal situation. We remove wisdom teeth all the time, whether they have grown in or they are still impacted underneath the gum line, we can remove them simply or surgically. It is recommended to have your wisdom teeth extracted before they start growing in. Even if your wisdom teeth are fully grown in and have caused you no trouble, they may cause you trouble in the future as they become more susceptible to infection in your thirties and forties.

The Tooth Extraction Procedure
- Simple Procedure- Using a local anesthetic to numb the surrounding areas, Vita Dental will likely loosen your tooth and pull it out easily using a hand tool called an elevator. These procedures are done when the tooth that needs to be extracted has erupted well above the gum line for easy access. We will use dental tools to loosen the tooth and lift it up and out of the gum line for a clean extraction.
- Surgical Procedure- A surgical extraction is a more complicated procedure as it requires us to cut into the gum line to retrieve the tooth. This is usually necessary during a wisdom tooth extraction or if a tooth is broken well below the gum line. A local anesthetic will minimize the pain or discomfort felt during these types of extractions. You can also talk with us about a dental sedation to take away your anxiety before and during the procedure as well.
